Stretch your legs and get in some quality cardio while absorbing fascinating facts about the mountain’s healing flora, unique fauna, and the varied traditions and history of Le Morne Mountain and its people. As you ascend the winding path – the route once used by enslaved Mauritians to escape the shackles of their oppressors – our expert guide takes you on a trip from the initial shade and darkness of the forest into a flood of sunlight that highlights the large cross atop the summit.

Duration:  approximately four hours

 

Terrain:  the first hour starts out with a wide, well-signposted path with plenty of luxurious shade afforded by the lush surrounding forest. Afterwards, the road narrows and becomes rockier towards the summit. If you’re looking for a hike in Mauritius that allows you to sample the island’s natural diversity and get an amazing workout – this is it!

Activities:  aside from the hike itself, our expert local guide teaches you about local plant life (their uses as food, medicine, and for diverse spiritual practices) and shares remarkable facts about the ‘slave route’s’ history. There are plenty of opportunities to capture unforgettable memories, but we invite you to be present in each moment. Soak up the sights, sounds, and smells, and revel in the insightful, moving, and exciting conversations you’re sure to have along the way.

  •  lightweight, comfortable clothing
  •  hiking boots or trainers with sturdy (not smooth!) soles

Departure: Monday through Saturday

 

Groups (max.12 persons):

  • Summer (Oct. – Mar.), leaving from 6:30 am to 7 am
  • Winter (Apr. – Sept.), leaving from 6:45 am to 7:15 am

Exclusive hikes: leaving between 6 am up to 8:45 am
